Steps
Intention
I intend to pray for the sake of Allah. In English: “I intend to pray the fard of the Maghrib prayer for the sake of Allah.”
The intention is made in the heart: it is enough to know which prayer one is about to perform.
Opening Takbir
Allah is the Greatest.
Men raise their hands to the level of the ears, women to the level of the shoulders, and say “Allāhu akbar”.
Qiyam and Recitation
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
One stands and recites Subhanaka, the Ta‘awwudh and Basmalah, al-Fatihah, and then a surah or at least three short verses.
Ruku‘
Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great, far above every imperfection.
Saying “Allāhu akbar”, one bows and holds the knees; the back and head are level.
Qawmah
Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.
One rises from ruku‘ saying “Sami‘a llāhu liman ḥamidah” and then says “Rabbanā laka l-ḥamd”.
Sajdah
Glory be to my Lord, the Most High, far above every imperfection.
Saying “Allāhu akbar”, one goes into sajdah; the forehead, nose, hands, knees and toes touch the ground, and the tasbih is said at least three times.
Second Rak‘ah
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
From the second sajdah one stands up saying “Allāhu akbar”.
First Sitting (Qa‘dah Ula)
All greetings are for Allah.
After the prostrations of the second rak‘ah one sits, recites at-Tahiyyat, and then stands up for the third rak‘ah.
Third Rak‘ah
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Saying “Allāhu akbar”, one stands up for the third rak‘ah.
Final Sitting (Qa‘dah Akhirah)
All greetings, prayers and good words are for Allah.
In the final sitting at-Tahiyyat, the Salli and Barik salawat, and the Rabbana prayers are recited.
Salam
May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.
The prayer is ended by giving salam first to the right, then to the left.
